Introduction

Grouping functions within EO Insight allow the user to define multiple sub-sets of their dataset, that are then analysed separately, with the results of all analyses then available on the EO Insight Board. The results of each sub-set of the dataset can be displayed as separate tabs either on an individual widget or on all widgets on the Board simultaneously. For example, should you wish to split your population into different groups based on age and gender and then display the results of the same analysis applied to all groups, this is easily achieved with the Group functions. You can define which combination of age and gender you want for each of your groups and then the Board will automatically create new tabs on each widget for each of your groups. This can be applied either to all widgets on the board simultaneously using the ‘Global’ grouping functions or to individual widgets of your choosing using the within ‘Widget’ grouping functions. With this combination of functionality you can have different groups applied to different widgets in any combination that best suits the goals of your EO Insight board.

RECOMMENDATION: As all widgets on your board update each time a global group is adjusted, for large datasets or boards containing many widgets we recommend applying global groups before adding widgets to your board. This will avoid unnecessary time spent recalculating your results.

Global Groups

‘Global’ groups are groups applied to every widget on your board (unless a widgets individual ‘Filter & Group’ function is enabled). Below are step by step instructions explaining how to add and remove such ‘Global’ groups.

For adding ‘Global’ groups to your board you have two options. You can either allow EO Insight to automatically split your data into groups based on unique Products, Sessions, Sequences or Replica, or you can manually define the combination of constraints that defines each group using the ‘Manual’ grouping functions. 

How to Add ‘Manual’ Groups to the entire Board

Step 1: Click on the ‘Filters’ logo in the sidebar to reveal the ‘Filters’ sidebar.

Step 2: Click on the ‘Groups’ tab at the top of the ‘Filters’ sidebar to view the Global ‘Groups’ menus

Step 3: Click the ‘Create Global Groups’ section title to reveal the options in this section

Step 4: Select from the drop down the number of groups you wish to create (max. 8)

Step 5: Select from the drop down the attributes that you wish to use to define your groups

Step 6: Select from the drop down any additional variables from your dataset you may wish to use to define your groups

Step 7: Click the ‘Apply Group Settings’ button to confirm these choices

Step 8: Click the ‘Active Global Group’ section title to reveal its options

Step 9: Click the ‘Adjust Active Global Groups’ section title to reveal the options for the groups you have created

Step 10: Click the drop down to reveal the constraint settings for each group

Step 11: Provide a name for the group in the text box provided

Step 12: Choose whether the constraints you defined in step 13 are combined with an AND or OR operator

Step 13: Adjust the various constraints to define the given group. In the below example a group will be created containing data in which all observations are from session 1, with panelists from the Netherlands (i.e. NLD) and aged 0 - 50.

Step 14: Click save to assign the constraints you have defined to the given group

Step 15: Repeat Steps 11, 12, 13 & 14 until constraints are applied to define all groups

Step 16: Click ‘Generate Groups’ to implement the new groups across your Board. Each widget on your board (unless a given widget’s individual Groups & Filters are enabled) will update to contain a separate tab for each global group you have defined (see below section ‘Viewing & Removing Global Groups’ for more information).

How to Add ‘Automatic’ Groups to the entire Board

It is also possible to use the ‘Automatic’ grouping function in EO Insight to allow EO Insight to automatically split your data into subsets either by unique Product, Session, Sequence or Replica. Below are the instructions for accessing this functionality.

Step 1: Click on the ‘Filters’ logo in the sidebar to reveal the ‘Filters’ sidebar.

Step 2: Click on the ‘Groups’ tab at the top of the ‘Filters’ sidebar to view the Global ‘Groups’ menus

Step 3: Click the ‘Automatic Grouping’ section title to reveal the options in this section

Step 4: Select the property on which EO Insight will split your data

Step 5: Click the ‘Generate Automatic Groups button to create these groups on your board

Viewing & Removing Global Groups

When global groups are applied any widget added to your dashboard (without within widget filters & groups enabled) will now display a separate tab for each of your groups (A), with each tab containing the output for a specific group (e.g. the results of the analysis performed on the group’s sub-set of the dataset). To see the output for a given group simply click on the tab displaying the group name (A). 

If you wish all widgets to switch to displaying the tab for the same group across all widgets on your board you can use the ‘Select Group’ function in the ‘Filters’ sidebar on the ‘Groups’ tab (B). Simply click the name of the group whose tab you wish to be displayed and this tab will be selected in all widgets on your board.

To check which constraints are applied to which Group, or adjust the constraints go to the ‘Adjust Active Global Groups’ section (C) on the ‘Groups’ tab in the ‘Filters’ sidebar. After making any adjustments to a group's constraints, click ‘Save’ in the group settings and then ‘Generate Groups’ to apply these changes to your board. If you have a large dataset with many widgets on your board updating multiple groups across the board may take some time.

You can remove all Global Groups by clicking the ‘Reset Groups’ button in the ‘Filters’ sidebar on the ‘Groups’ tab (D). Or alternatively if you wish to reset both Global Filters & Groups you can click the ‘Restore’ button in the ‘Filters’ sidebar at the bottom of the ‘Overview’ tab.

Widget Groups

It is also possible to add groups to a single widget rather than all widgets. To do so follow the steps below.

How to Add Groups to a single Widget

Step 1: Click on the drop down button in the top right corner of the widget to reveal the within widget menu

Step 2: Click on the ‘Filters & Groups’ option to access the within Widget Filter and Grouping settings

Step 3: Select the ‘Activate Widget Filters & Groups’ tab from the menu on the left side of the widget

Step 4: Toggle the switch to ON to enable the widget level Filters & Group options. This will release the widget from any Global filters and groups so that it has access to the original dataset.

Step 5: From the new menu options you have enabled select the ‘Create Widget Groups’ tab. This will reveal the options for adding new groups to your widget.

Step 6: Choose how many groups you wish to create from the drop down menu

Step 7: To define your groups you can use any combination of attributes or other variables existing within your dataset. These first need to be selected from the drop down menus shown below. All attributes in the dataset are available in one drop down menu.

Step 8: While the remaining variables can be selected from a separate drop down menu

Step 9: After you have selected the variables you wish to use for your groups click the ‘Apply Widget Group Settings’ button

Step 10: You now have Groups active in your Dashboard but their characteristics are not yet defined. To define which values define each group first click on the ‘Active Widget Groups’ tab to reveal the separate group options.

Step 11: In the ‘Active Widget Groups’ section you will find a separate drop down for each group, within which you will find the parameters that you can adjust to define each of your groups

Step 12: Provide a name for the group in the text box provided

Step 13: Choose whether the constraints you define in step 14 are combined with an AND or OR operator

Step 14: Adjust the various constraints to define the given group. In the below example a group will be created containing data in which all observations are from session 1, with panelists from the Netherlands (i.e. NLD) and aged 50 - 100.

Step 15: Click ‘Save’ to assign the constraints you have defined to the given group

A separate tab has now been added to your widget for each of your groups. To see these results first select the ‘Display’ option from the widget dropdown menu (A).

You now see separate tabs for each of your groups (B), with each tab containing the output for a specific group (e.g. the results of the analysis performed on the group’s sub-set of the dataset). To see the output for a given group simply click on the tab displaying the group name.

How to Remove Groups from a single Widget

If you wish to remove your Widget groups and restore the widgets dependency on the Global dataset (i.e. incl Global Filters & Groups) follow the steps below.

Step 1: Click on the ‘Reset Widget’ option in the left side menu

Step 2: Toggle the ‘Widget Filters & Groups’ switch to OFF. The widget will update its output in response to the newly restored dataset.
