Introduction
When building your questionnaire there are instances where panellists may need to reference their previous selections or inputs within a questionnaire. For example, imagine a scenario where respondents are asked to select all the brands they are familiar with from a comprehensive list. Subsequently, they might be asked to rate their preference for the brand they like the most among those previously selected. In such cases, incorporating mechanisms that allow respondents to refer back to their previous responses becomes essential. This article explores strategies for implementing this functionality effectively within surveys, thereby enhancing respondent engagement and data accuracy.
Piping
In EyeQuestion it's possible to use the answer of a previous question as option for a new question. This feature is called "Piping".
Suppose you have the Pick Any/All that Apply question "What are your favorite two cities?"
When you run the questionnaire and answer "Athens and Tallin" in the first question, the following question (my favorite city) will look like this:
You can set up the Piping feature by following these steps:
1. Add Category/Hedonic (One-Choice) question type.
2. Add only one option item only. Set the Value of this item to "replace" and the Display to the label of the question shown above; in our example is "my favorite cities".
Reverse Piping
It's also possible to exclude an answer option from your previous question. You could for example set up a category one-choice question: "Which type of pasta do you like to eat? And you want to exclude one of the answer options in the second question (Cannelloni, Fettuccine, Gnocchi etc).
1. Add Pick Any/All that Apply(Multiple-choice) question type.
2. Add Category/Hedonic (only one option) type of question. Set the Value of this item to "invreplace" and the Display to the label of the question shown above; in our example is "pasta preference".
