How to Set up and Monitor Quotas in EyeQuestion

In this article, we will discuss what quotas are, how to set up a simple quota in EyeQuestion, and how to monitor the status of the quota.

What is a quota?

A quota is a pre-defined target or limit for the number of respondents who can answer a specific question or set of questions in a survey. It is a way to ensure that the sample of respondents is representative of the population being studied. Quotas can be set for various factors such as age, gender, income, education level, occupation, etc.

How to set up a simple quota in EyeQuestion?

It is possible to add a simple quota in an EyeQuestion project by using the Go On – Go To option. For example, we can create a short screener that only allows 50 male respondents and 50 female respondents to participate in the test.

The screener will have three crucial screens:
  • Screen 2 contains the "Gender" question having the Quota.
  • Screen 1 is the END screen of people who are SELECTED.
  • Screen 2 is the END screen of people who are NOT SELECTED.
  • To achieve that only 50 male respondents and 50 female respondents are selected, you need to configure the three screens mentioned above carefully.
The Gender question in this case can be to be a Category question with only one fixed option allowed. Quota can be applied also using other question type such as the Pick Any one.
You can specify the value for each of your answer option. The value can be numerical or a text. In this example we are going to assign the value "f" to Female and "m" to Male.

A Category question has two settings in the branching settings named GO ON and GO TO. The Go On – Go To option is used to redirect respondents when a certain answer is given but can also be used to set up the quota. If we set it up so that “GO ON" contains the following: "f=50,m=50" and "GO TO" would contain "NOT SELECTED," then after 50 male and female responses, the next response (51st) will be redirected to the NOT SELECTED screen.

The Selected screen is reached automatically by people who are not redirected to the NOT SELECTED screen. The only thing you need to do is prevent them from continuing with the following screen, the NOT SELECTED screen. You can do this by marking this by enabling Close Sessions for the Selected Screen.

How to monitor the status of the quota?

When you deploy the project, you can monitor the status by opening the Live Data monitor. This can be accessed via the “Data” tab in your project and clicking the magnifier icon as seen in the screenshot:

This overview will contain the Quota question and display the answering options and how many people selected a specific option. You are able to use this information to keep track of how many respondents have been selected for each quota and when necessary make adjustments.

Things to consider:
  1. The value you choose for the answer value in the question to which you want to apply the quota must be exactly the same in the GO ON field.
  2. The screen name to which you redirect non-selected participants can be any name; however, it is critical that the name used be the same as the one entered in the GO TO fie
